Oh, what to wear? What to wear? What to wear to The Art Deco Society of California Preservation Ball? It’s coming up on Saturday May 23rd and all the fun is happening at the Scottish Rite Center, across from Lake Merritt in Oakland.
The annual ball is one of the premiere Art Deco events of the season which includes a silent auction, the Art Deco Preservation Awards ceremony, dancing to Don Neeley’s Royal Society Jazz Orchestra, a dance revue by The Deco Belles, and featuring master of ceremonies KCEA radio host Craig Roberts.
Ball co-chair Alice Jurow has this to say:
I am very excited about this year’s ball and hope everyone will
have fun getting ready for it. When we toured the lavish interior of our
venue, the fourth floor of the Oakland Scottish Rite building, we were
struck by the resemblance to some of the glorious spaces in Hearst
Castle. Since Marion Davies and WR Hearst threw some of the most
fabulous parties of the 1920s and 1930s – what better inspiration for a
Grand Ball? The venue has a lot of varied spaces, so be sure to explore
— there will be surprises!
Speaking of surprises, how about a masquerade? That’s right, it’s a masquerade ball in the style of the Golden Age of Hearst Castle, which means donning an all out costume of say – Marie Antoinette, Pierrot, Pierrette, or just sport a mask. The masquerade part is optional, however, formal attire styles of the 1920s, 30s, or 40s is not.
I’ve chosen to go 1940s this year in a spring-friendly peach gown embellished with small flower buds of which I will echo in my hair. A pair of 40s style Peter Fox Shoes and a Whiting & Davis gold mesh bag complete the look. As for the mask – still working on that.
The big day is Saturday, May 23rd. It all begins at 8pm. Click here to purchase tickets and here for outfit inspiration.
We’ll see you at the ball.
Thanks for helping us get the word out, Moya — we look forward to seeing all our wonderful guests!!
My pleasure, Alice. I’ll see you at the ball!
Thank you for the link to Peter Fox shoes! I recognized that my favorite Gatsby slippers, which I finally wore out after 20 years, must have been knockoffs. (Would that I had known!)
(Do you have a LaQuey gown? A little bird told me she is getting an award this year!)
