untitledAnd the models were so scantily dressed and so underfed and so clompy – even when wearing six-inch, lethally dangerous stiletto heels. I always thought models were supposed to be elegant and walk beautifully. Not so. I just wanted to take them home, warm them up, cook them dinner and tell them to smile!

– Jenni Murray, host of Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4

Ms. Murray attended London Fashion Week, which was held February 14 – 18, 2014 at Somerset House.

Elegant? Oh, how passé.

StyleWOW, the Art Institute of California (AiCASF) Student Fashion Show is coming up on Saturday, June 15th, 7pm at the San Francisco Design Center.

Last week I was fortunate to meet some of the participating students and get a sneak peek at the featured fashions. I’m really impressed with each student’s creativity and the thought and attention they have put into the process.

  • Christopher Maracha has created a line of men’s active wear using mesh as a layering fabric .
  • The works of French artist Augustin Lesage inspired Rie Yamamoto to create her own fabrics for men’s coats.
  • Using textured fabrics and layering, Fiona Leung designed a line of chic evening wear for women inspired by the ballet, Romeo and Juliet.
  • Francisco Rodriguez is thinking outside the fashion box with his use of soft vinyl for women’s dresses and skirts.
  • Hieu Nguyen’s formal ball gowns are all about romance in luxurious lace and tulle.

To be included in the runway show students applied last fall and twelve were selected by Fashion Director, Geetika Gupta.

Students from other disciplines are working together on the event including Fashion Marketing, Media, and the International Culinary School is catering the VIP reception. “This year, I am so delighted that students from programs other than Fashion are greatly involved in the show,” says Gupta.

On board with AiCASF is London Fashion Week Founder Michael Rosen, who is working with students encouraging them to push their creative boundaries for this year’s show. “Hearing and seeing the changes that Ai California – San Francisco is aiming to make in their fashion programs, I am honored and privileged to help guide them through to international runway style and standards.”

StyleWow promises to be an evening of fashion fun and inspiration.

Vivienne Westwood London Fashion Week 2012.

After her show at London Fashion Week (February 17-22, 2012), Vivienne Westwood spoke her mind on  the state of modern fashion.

Everybody looks like clones … We are so conformist, nobody is thinking. We are all sucking up stuff. We have been trained to be consumers and we are all-consuming far too much. What I’m saying is buy less and choose well.

I think what Vivienne is talking about is style. What people lack is individual style. They might be decked out in the latest designer must-haves, but there’s no personal touch, no pizzazz. Take a look at what Vivienne is wearing in the photo above : a t-shirt, baggy trousers, and platform shoes with colorful socks – that is individual style.
